About the museum
In this house the best-known writer of the Dainava region, Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius, was born on 19 October 1882 and lived until 1904. He last visited his homeland around 1934. The house was built in the second half of the 19th century on the north-eastern edge of Subartonys village. During the Second World War a dairy was set up in it; later the house was abandoned. In 1966 the V. Krėvė memorial museum was set up in it, and on 21 December 1999, by decision of the Varėna District Council, the independent Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius Memorial Museum was established. Since 2017 it has operated as a branch of the Merkinė Region Museum.
The exhibition fills the whole house. The cottage (gryčia) has been restored as it was before the 1930s. In the living room (seklyčia) stand a cupboard, a small table and a wall clock, which the writer brought from Baku; in the bedroom the exhibition shows the life and work of V. Krėvė. The surroundings of Subartonys village also help visitors get to know the native landscape, the Dzūkian homestead and everyday life.
In 1992 the remains of the writer and his wife were brought from America and reburied in the Subartonys village cemetery; the grave is decorated with the sculpture “Singer of the Dainava Land” by folk artist Ipolitas Užkurnis. The museum offers the tour “Writer Vincas Krėvė – Life and Work” and educational programmes.
