About the museum
Tatars have lived in the Merkinė region since the 15th century and were renowned as craftsmen and fishermen; before the war they had founded a fishing cooperative. The private museum in Subartonys was set up by the owners Liusė and Vladas Gaidukevičius, in the house of their homestead, where a primary school operated before the war.
The museum welcomes visitors with prayer words written above the door and with melodies of Tatar music. An open Quran is placed in an honoured place; the museum keeps two copies of the Quran – a printed one and a handwritten one. Here you can see national Tatar costumes, sewn from plain luxurious fabrics, embroidered with gold thread and decorated with beads, as well as household objects, and get to know Tatar crafts, music and art. A small section is devoted to the history of the Tatars of the Merkinė region and to Tatar-born officers who fought for Lithuania's freedom. The hosts can offer guests Tatar dishes.
