About the museum
The manor house in Antazavė, Zarasai District, was built at the end of the 18th century. The neoclassical ensemble is believed to have been designed by the architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius to a plan prepared by Antanas Naglovskis. The manor belonged to the famous Pliateris family: Pranciškus Ksaveras Pliateris was born here, and his daughter Emilija Pliaterytė, who often visited her grandmother in Antazavė, signed a statement on her decision to join the insurgents in these rooms on 25 March 1831. From Antazavė she rode to Dusetos, where together with her cousin Cezaris Pliateris she gathered the first insurgents. The manor was also held by the Ledochowski counts, the barons von Ropp and the Voinarovskis family.
In Soviet times the manor housed a children’s home, from 1961 a boarding school, and after its closure in 1989 a children’s care home; later the manor was abandoned. Repair work in 2012–2022 turned it into a modern cultural centre: in 2015 the traditional crafts centre opened, in 2020 a training and conference hall was set up in the attic, and in 2022 the Emilija Pliaterytė exhibition.
In the weaving, woodcarving and ceramics workshops on the basement floor, masters pass on their experience to pupils. The centre holds exhibitions of works by folk masters and folk artists, crafts demonstrations and educational sessions, where visitors can try out old techniques.
