About the museum
The Museum of the History of the Freedom Struggles in Obeliai, a branch of the Rokiškio krašto muziejus, was founded in 1998. Its exhibits, which bear witness to the Lithuanian freedom struggles, were collected by the teacher and former partisan Andrius Dručkus (1928–2018), who donated them to the museum; during the Soviet period they were kept in secret, out of sight of the security services.
The museum building has a grim history: from 1944 to 1953 it housed the NKVD–MVD–MGB department of the Obeliai district (valsčius) and the headquarters of the stribai (Soviet-era auxiliary police), where people were held, interrogated and tortured. The outdoor exhibition features copies of a Lithuanian partisan bunker and of a deportation barrack in Siberia. In the educational programmes, visitors can experience the everyday life of partisans and deportees, living in a bunker or a barrack.
