About the museum
Aukštaitija National Park is Lithuania's oldest national park, established in 1974 to protect the unique ecosystem of the upper Žeimena river at the junction of three landscape areas. The park covers about 40,574 ha; water takes up 15.5% of the area and forests about 69%. The abundance of lakes shaped the distinctive cultural traditions of the people who lived here.
The visitor centre is in the village of Palūšė, in the building of the park administration. Its main exhibition theme is “Lake People”: it presents old and modern fishing methods, the floating of sielius and the swimming of cows.
