About the museum
The Ignalinos krašto muziejus (Ignalina Regional Museum) is in the town centre of Ignalina, on Ateities Street. The permanent exhibition “Istorinė Ignalina” (“Historic Ignalina”) greets visitors as soon as they open the door: information boards and games tell of the past of the town and its surroundings. The Ethnographic Hall keeps the museum's richest collection, and “Vestuvės Ignalinos krašte” (“Weddings in the Ignalina Region”) recreates the registry office hall that operated from 1991 to 2010, with authentic furniture and wedding clothes. This exhibition is complemented by a musical instruments exhibition on the first floor, with cymbals.
The museum also shows a treasure of 18th-century copper coins of the Russian Empire – 84 coins almost 300 years old, found in the village of Keižiai. The educational exhibition “Kelionė geležinkelio istorijos bėgiais” (“Journey along the Rails of Railway History”) is devoted to the cultural heritage of railways, and an interactive model depicts the village of Palūšė and the traditional craft of fishing. There is also the exhibition “Senojo kaimo šiluma” (“The Warmth of the Old Village”), photographs by the local photographer Algis Jakštas about the people of Mielagėnai eldership, and the interactive game “Ežerų krašto žinovas” (“Expert on the Lake Region”).
From 23 September 2026 the museum is renewing its exhibitions, so visits to the exhibitions and guided tours are temporarily not held, but educational sessions and exhibitions continue at the museum. The Ignalinos krašto muziejus also includes the Prof. Adomas Hrebnickis Memorial Museum in Rojus village.
