About the museum
The Babtų kraštotyros muziejus (Babtai Local History Museum) was founded in 1958 in school premises. From about 1947 pupils brought old coins, stone axes and household objects, which the teacher Marija Markauskienė, the future founder of the museum, used in history lessons.
From 1971 to 2003 the museum was housed in a one-storey wooden house with an attic; later, when the owner took the building back, it moved to the premises of the eldership at Nevėžio g. 3. A permanent exhibition currently covers ancient Babtai, peasant businesses, crafts, daily life, echoes of the 1863 uprising and education; old household technology is also on display.
During the school year, lessons for pupils of various grades are held at the museum. Together with the Raudondvario dvaras (Raudondvaris Manor) and the Kauno rajono muziejus (Kaunas District Museum), it forms a cultural tourism route in Kaunas District.
