About the museum
The Antano ir Jono Juškų etninės kultūros muziejus (Antanas and Jonas Juška Museum of Ethnic Culture) was founded in 1990 in the former parsonage of Vilkija, the oldest surviving building in the town, believed to be more than 300 years old. The walls of this house saw many well-known Lithuanian creators, but the most striking mark was left by the most famous Lithuanian folklorist and ethnographer, Antanas Juška.
The wealth of Lithuanian folk heritage he collected is striking: contemporaries mention a dictionary of more than 70,000 old Lithuanian words, a songbook of about 7,000 songs and a collection of about 2,000 melodies. The museum displays letters handwritten by Vydūnas, books marked with autographs by B. Buračas, fabrics with woven patterns, chests and hundreds of old household furnishings.
Every year traditional song and calendar festivals of the Juška brothers take place here, as well as exhibitions and meetings with interesting people. The museum is a branch of the Kauno rajono muziejus (Kaunas District Museum).
