About the museum
The Čekauskų etnografijos muziejus (Čekauskai Ethnography Museum) in Lekėčiai opened in 2010. Interest in old tools and household objects began in 2005, when the family inherited items from their grandparents – several planes of different purposes and household utensils. The museum was first housed in the attic of a farm building; on 14 May 2016 a new 80-square-metre building opened its doors.
The exhibition consists mainly of woodworking tools, especially planes: there are more than 600 of them, the oldest dating from 1838. Also on display are flax-processing tools, from scutching tools to weaving looms, the bread-making process, ironing equipment, scales, working tape recorders from 1953 and 1986, a post-war gramophone, a mini library, and a fragment of the furnishing of a Zanavykai farmer's room.
The owner of the museum, Gintas Čekauskas, is a certified master of traditional crafts. In the exhibition devoted to the tradition of shingle roofing, visitors can carve a shingle themselves.
