About the museum
In 1961 a regional studies museum was set up at the Veliuona school; in 1979 the Veliuona Regional History Museum was formed from it and became a branch of the Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum. Until 2016 the museum was housed in the 19th-century classicist wooden Veliuona manor; now it is temporarily located in the town centre, in the administrative building of the Veliuona eldership, on the ground floor. The museum is a branch of the Jurbarkas Regional Museum.
The exhibition introduces the historical past of Veliuona, depicted in the paintings of Vytautas Gerulaitis: “Veliuona Castle”, and portraits of the Lithuanian grand dukes Vytenis, Gediminas and Vytautas. The interwar exhibition displays photographs by Antanas Mickus from 1925–1945, which capture views of the town, its life and people, as well as the craft tools of the time.
