About the museum
The Dviračių muziejus (Bicycle Museum) is one of the branches of the Šiaulių “Aušros” muziejus (Aušra Museum of Šiauliai) and the only museum in Lithuania specialising in the history of the bicycle. It is located in central Šiauliai, on Vilniaus gatvė (boulevard), and has been operating for almost four decades.
The exhibition “Dviratis technologijų pasaulyje” (The Bicycle in the World of Technology), which combines digital technologies with traditional exhibits, has been operating since 2004. It is arranged not only chronologically but also by theme: it shows the history of the Šiauliai bicycle and engine factory “Vairas” (Steering Wheel), bicycle sport in Lithuania and journeys around the world by bicycle.
The collection includes bicycles, velomobiles and other exhibits: a wooden bicycle prototype, the “seleriferis”, home-made bicycles from the Žagarė and Pakruojis areas, a German sports bicycle from 1926, modern mountain bikes, a monocycle and racing bicycles. The renewed exhibition has interactive zones where visitors can try the bicycles themselves.
