About the museum
The nature museum was founded in September 2000, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Faculty of Pedagogy; its founder, Stasys Gliaudys, has been collecting exhibits since 1974. On 18 December 2013 the museum was given the name of Stasys Gliaudys, long-serving lecturer of the faculty, creator of the Botanical Garden and nature museum, and honorary citizen of Šiauliai.
The museum is unique in northern Lithuania: it displays natural exhibits collected over several decades, many of which reflect the nature of Lithuania. In total more than 4,000 exhibits have been gathered – 73 species and forms of sponges and similar sea animals, 889 species of insects (534 of them butterflies), 1,011 species and forms of molluscs, 182 bird species, 39 species of starfish and sea urchins, 46 species of fish, amphibians and reptiles, as well as exotic warm-water sea animals.
