About the museum

For almost a hundred years the “Rūta” confectionery factory filled the town of Šiauliai with its aromas. In 2012 it opened the old factory building to visitors, and the Rūtos šokolado muziejus (Rūta Chocolate Museum) was set up here. The exhibition tells the story of the factory and the four-millennia history of chocolate consumption: where “chocolate trees” grow, how the Maya and the Aztecs made chocolate, and how its consumption traditions changed. The museum also tells of the first chocolate factories in Lithuania and of “Rūta”, the longest-operating factory in the country.

The museum offers interactive sessions: after booking, participants can take part in the educational programme “Saldžioji laboratorija” (“Sweet Laboratory”), in which chocolate sweets are made, or in chocolate and sweets tastings. Next door are the historic “Rūta” sweets shop and café.
