About the museum

The Fotografijos muziejus (Photography Museum) opened on 25 May 1973 as a public museum, under the patronage of the Lithuanian Photographic Art Society; the initiator of the idea was the photojournalist Antanas Dilys. In 1976 the museum received permanent premises in the old town centre of Šiauliai, on Vilniaus Street, and in the same year it came under the management of the Aušros muziejus (Aušra Museum).

The museum kept expanding: in 1983 it was given another floor of the building, in 1990 a new exhibition on the history of Lithuanian photography was installed, and during the reconstruction of 2009–2014 it occupied the whole four-storey building. In 2014 the Vito Luckaus fotografijos centras (Vitas Luckus Photography Centre) was founded here, researching Lithuanian art photography of the second half of the 20th century.

The museum holds about 150,000 items: photographs, negatives, photographic equipment, printed matter and documents. On 25 May 2023, marking the 50th anniversary, a new permanent exhibition on the history of photography, “Laisvę fotografijai!” (“Freedom for Photography!”), was opened.
