About the museum

The ethnographic farmstead consists of a house and a barn built in 1905. The collecting of exhibits began in 1991, and the farmstead opened its doors to visitors in 1994. The exhibition is continually enriched with new objects collected within the park.

It tells how the Šiliniai Dzūkai walked about in “grybų trobelės” (mushroom huts) to gather mushrooms, fished, hunted, lit fires with a skiltuvas (fire-making tool), lit their way with a “dziedas” (torch), wore vyžos (bast footwraps), lured bees into a hollow pine tree and climbed the tree with a “geinys” (climbing strap). Visitors get to know the way of life, customs, traditions and crafts of the Šiliniai Dzūkai, hear the legends and tales of Marcinkonys and its surroundings and the old Dzūkian songs, and find out which dishes the Dzūkai cooked for the calendar festivals.
