About the museum

Marcinkonys is one of the largest villages in Lithuania and lies in Dzūkija National Park. The visitor centre here promotes the natural and cultural heritage of the region. The centre houses a modern exhibition, “Girių apsuptyje / Dainavos girios gamta ir žmonės” (Surrounded by Forests – Nature and People of the Dainava Forest), presenting the land of the Šilinė Dzūkians and the way of life and household of the Marcinkonys area.

The exhibition features an old Dzūkian stove on wooden foundations, a narrow-gauge railway draisine that berry pickers once rode to the bog, and interactive games introducing the nature of bogs and forests. The visitor centre provides information about places worth seeing, hiking and cycling trails, accommodation in village farmsteads, tastings of culinary heritage, events, guided tours, and nature and ethnoculture education (nature lessons, hikes, camps, weaving straw or willow, candle making). Souvenirs and books are also sold.
