About the museum

The “Drevinės bitininkystės ekspozicija” (tree-hollow beekeeping exhibition) was set up in 2006 in the village of Musteika, within the territory of Dzūkija National Park. In this remote village surrounded by forests, the main livelihood of the residents for a long time was tree-hollow beekeeping – collecting honey from bees that had settled in the hollows of trees. This tradition goes back to the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

An old apiary of log hives (kelminiai aviliai) was created for the exhibition, and bees settled in the tree hollows of the surrounding forests. Visitors can see how the bees are looked after in the log hives, how honey and wax are processed, and how log hives and small decoy hives (vabikai, used to lure swarms) are made. New swarms are released into the hives at the beginning of summer.

Visitors can also try out the old crafts in the apiary, and a wickerwork week is held in the village. Around it stretches the ethnographic village of Musteika, whose old homesteads are protected as monuments of local architecture, and the Čepkeliai bog.
