About the museum

The museum is housed on the central square of the small town, in a former Orthodox church built in 1887 after the historic Merkinė town hall was demolished. The first exhibits were displayed in 1956 in a small room of Merkinė secondary school; in 1968 the museum exhibition was moved to the disused church. In 1974 the museum became a branch of the Alytus Local History Museum, and in 1998 the Varėna District Council decided to set up an independent Merkinė Regional Museum.

The museum shows a modernly designed exhibition on the times of Merkinė Castle and the town, on the death of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Vladislovas Vaza in Merkinė in 1648, and on the partisans' attack on Merkinė in 1945. Archaeological finds and the bell of the Merkinė town hall from 1670 are also on display.

The museum has branches: the Perlojos istorijos muziejus (Perloja History Museum) and the Vinco Krėvės-Mickevičiaus memorialinis muziejus (Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius Memorial Museum) in Subartonys. Guided tours of Merkinė are offered – to the old church, the hill-fort, the place of Vaza's death, the sites of the synagogues and the Merkinė crosses hill.
