About the museum
The Katinų muziejus was founded in 1990 by the naturalist Vanda Kavaliauskienė (1923–2011). Her extensive collection of cats of all kinds no longer fitted in her home, so it was moved to the museum. Today this collection is unique in all the Baltic states.
The museum displays cat sculptures, paintings, postcards, postage stamps, dishes, toys, drawings and books, and visitors can also read poems about cats. The exhibits came from all over the world – from England, the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Cuba, African countries and, of course, Lithuania. Three live cats also live in the museum and greet visitors.
The museum is looked after by the Šiauliai Young Naturalists' Centre, and next to it is an animal garden, where various exotic animals are kept – snakes, lizards, crocodiles and even a small monkey. The two different exhibitions complement each other.
