Laisvės kovų muziejus

The Freedom Struggles Museum in Lazdijai, set up in the so-called white Petrauskai house, with the surviving NKGB–MGB internal prison and an interactive exhibition on resistance.

About the museum

The museum was set up in the so-called white Petrauskai house in Lazdijai, where the NKVD, the KGB and other occupation structures were once located. In the basement of the building, authentic torture cells of the fighters for Lithuania’s freedom have survived.

The two floors of the building house interactive exhibitions, in which sounds, stories and post-war songs can be heard; in aged mirrors the images of past and present intertwine. Modern technologies convey the experiences of the prisoners.

In the surviving authentic NKGB–MGB internal prison of Lazdijai, visitors can learn about its history and that of the prisons of all Lithuania. In the memory cell, testimonies of freedom fighters about interrogations and torture are heard. One cell is dedicated to Elė Radzevičiūtė-Andriuškevičienė, the “Nightingale of Dzūkija”, a partisan liaison and songwriter. The prison also has a prisoners’ exercise yard, a warder’s room and a punishment cell.
