About the museum

The V. Mykolaičio-Putino muziejus is the first museum in Lithuania dedicated to the outstanding writer Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas. It was founded in 1968, a year after the writer's death, at the secondary boarding school in Kapsukas (now Marijampolė), which was named after the writer.

In 1976 the exhibition was expanded and the museum opened in a separate house in the garden of the Marian monastery; the reconstruction of the house and the exhibition design were prepared by the architect Vytautas Nasvytis. In 1993 the museum became a branch of the Marijampolės kraštotyros muziejus. In 2002, when the boarding school was reorganised, it was moved to the premises of the Marijampolės Rygiškių Jono gimnazija – the writer had studied at this gymnasium for four years.

In the first hall the writer is presented as a poet, playwright, publicist, scholar and translator: books, translations, letters, postcards, documents with autographs, objects belonging to relatives and works by artists that interpret his writing are displayed. The second hall covers his academic work at the universities of Kaunas and Vilnius, the last period of his life, and the editions of the novels “Sukilėliai” (“The Rebels”), “Krizė” (“The Crisis”) and “Altorių šešėly” (“In the Shadow of the Altars”).
