About the museum
The Rokiškio krašto muziejus (Rokiškis Regional Museum) was founded in 1933 by a local studies society made up of schools inspector Juozas Ruseckas, teacher Petras Bliūdžius, town mayor Julijonas Malevičius and other enthusiasts. At first the museum was housed in library premises, and from 1935 in the town centre. The first collections were made up of objects gathered by teachers and pupils of the county, including carved spindles, an old sculpture, wooden vessels and a large collection of stone axes.
In 1940, when the Pšezdziecki owners of the Rokiškis manor were forced to leave Lithuania, the museum moved into the palace to preserve the artistic treasures left in the manor and in the other nationalised manors of Rokiškis county. On 15 September the first exhibitions were opened in the manor, and about a thousand people visited on that day. Soon afterwards part of the palace was taken over by a Red Army regiment.
Today the museum is housed in the Tyzenhauz and Pšezdziecki manor complex in Rokiškis. The palace shows the updated Rokiškis regional history exhibition and the exhibition “Rokiškio dvaras. XIX a. – XX a. vid.” (“Rokiškis Manor, 19th to mid-20th Century”), with restored interiors, belongings of the counts' family and a collection of noble costumes. In the northern outbuilding there is an exhibition of carvings by the woodcarver Lionginas Šepka, as well as a collection of nativity scenes. The museum also has exhibitions in Kriaunai and Obeliai.
