About the museum
The Rietavo Oginskių kultūros istorijos muziejus has been operating since 1995 in the former music school building of the Oginskiai manor at the Rietavas manor site. The main direction of the museum's work is to preserve the cultural traditions of the Oginskiai princes and to cherish the historical memory of the Rietavas region.
The Oginskiai residence in Rietavas was an important centre of manor culture in Samogitia (Žemaitija), but because of wars and occupations the manor palace did not survive; only the outbuildings and the park remain. Together with the municipality, the museum has contributed to reviving the historic manor site: a colonnade and the palace parterre were restored by the park, and on the foundations of the manor an open-air exhibition, “Oginskiai: padovanota Rietavui ir Lietuvai” (The Oginskiai: Given to Rietavas and Lithuania), was set up.
The museum organises exhibitions, educational sessions and events devoted to the Oginskiai heritage, the history of the Rietavas region and the manor culture of Samogitia.
