About the museum
The Šilalė regional museum began in 1962, when the Šilalė branch of the Lithuanian Local Studies Society was founded. In 1976, while the burnt-out Children's Music School was being rebuilt, a museum with exhibition halls and storerooms was set up on its second floor. Many exhibits were transferred from the school museums of the district and from the collections of local studies enthusiasts. At first the museum was supported by the Telšiai “Alka” society; from 1980 it belonged to the Šiauliai “Aušra” Museum and became a state museum.
In 1990 the museum lost its premises, and its exhibits were moved to the town's central library. From 1994 it was called the Šilalė Regional Museum; later it became a branch of the library and cultural centre. It became an independent municipal budgetary institution in 2005, and in 2006 it was given the name of the local studies enthusiast Vladas Statkevičius (1911–1999).
More than 24,000 archaeological, historical, numismatic and ethnographic exhibits are kept in the centralised collections. The exhibition on S. Gaudėšius Street reflects the history of the town and the material and spiritual culture of the region's people; in the exhibition halls, exhibitions of folk artists, artists and pupils are held, together with commemorative and educational events. The museum also has branches across the district, including the Dionizo Poškos Baublių muziejus in Bijotai and the Upynos etnografijos muziejus (Upyna Ethnography Museum).
