About the museum
The Žemaičių dailės muziejus (Samogitian Art Museum) has been housed in the Mykolas Oginskis Palace in Plungė since 1994. The manor ensemble was built in 1873–1886 by Prince Mykolas Oginskis; in the orchestra school he founded, the future painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis studied in 1889–1893. The Italian neo-Renaissance palace and its outbuildings are surrounded by one of the largest mixed-style parks in Lithuania – 58.3 ha.
The museum collects and shows professional art of the 20th and 21st centuries, donated to it by Samogitian artists living in Lithuania and abroad, and also holds heritage objects of the Plungė region. Every four years the World Samogitian Art Exhibitions are held here, and every year the international Mykolas Oginskis Music Festival takes place.
The scientific library keeps the personal libraries and archives of the historian Zenonas Ivinskis, the local studies enthusiast Eleonora Ravickienė and others. A branch of the museum is the Žemaitės memorialinis muziejus (Žemaitė Memorial Museum) at the Bukantė manor house.
