About the museum
Panemunė Castle is a complex of four wings around a closed courtyard, surrounded by five cascading ponds and a park. The castle once had four towers; two have survived. It combines the styles of different eras – Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism – and its interiors retain wall paintings that recall the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
The castle belonged to the Gelgaudas family; Antanas Anupras Gelgaudas, general elder (seniūnas) of the Duchy of Samogitia, lived here with his family. Today the castle is a branch of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VDA): it houses a museum-gallery, an artists' residence, guest rooms and a restaurant. After 190 years, the representative apartments of the castle, which have kept their authentic room layout, have been opened to visitors.
