About the museum
The Ukmergės kraštotyros muziejus (Ukmergė Local History Museum) was founded in 1944 on the initiative of the painters Domicelė and Petras Tarabildas; it was solemnly opened on 6 May 1944. Earlier attempts to set up a regional museum, in 1933 and 1940, had been made, but almost no exhibits from that period survived. In the first two weeks after the opening, more than two thousand visitors came to the museum.
After the war the museum lost a large part of its exhibits and moved premises several times. In 1975 it moved to the building on Kęstučio Square, and in 1995 the Veprių visuomeninis muziejus (Veprių Public Museum, founded in 1967) was attached to it. The Užugirio skyrius (Užugiris branch) was established in 2003.
Today the museum is housed in the former cinema “Draugystė” (“Friendship”), built in 1959 to a standard design. In 2016 the building was renovated and adapted for the museum, and a new permanent exhibition on the history of the town of Ukmergė was created there. The branches of the museum are Siesikų pilis (Siesikai Castle), the Prezidento Antano Smetonos Užugirio dvaras ir mokykla-muziejus (Užugiris Manor and School Museum of President Antanas Smetona) and the Veprių krašto muziejus (Veprių Regional Museum).
