About the museum
The Samogitian bishop Motiejus Kazimieras Valančius was born in 1801 in the village of Nasrėnai. His parents' house was the place where the future bishop's personality was formed; in 1969 a museum was set up in his childhood home, and in 2025 it became a branch of the Kretingos muziejus (Kretinga Museum).
The homestead, open to visitors all year round, is adorned with nine wooden sculptures created by folk artists, which tell of the bishop's work and literary legacy. Nearby lies the Motiejaus Valančiaus ąžuolynas (Motiejus Valančius Oak Grove), planted in 1995 to mark the 200th anniversary of the bishop's birth, and in front of it stands a monument by Kęstutis Balčiūnas, erected in 2001. A five-chamber granary that has survived on the homestead, a monument of folk architecture, shows the everyday life of 19th-century Samogitian peasants. Since 1999 a festival of barn theatres has been held here every year.
