About the museum

Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė, known in literature by the pen name Žemaitė, was born on 4 June 1845 at the Bukantė manor house near Šateikiai. In the 19th century the manor belonged to Count Pranciškus Plateris, and the writer's parents were its managers – her father a forester (urėdas) and her mother a housekeeper (gaspadinė). In 1965, marking the 120th anniversary of the writer's birth, a memorial exhibition was set up in the restored birthplace.

In 2012 the residential house was renovated again, and the barn and granary were rebuilt. Since 1994 the museum has belonged to the Žemaičių dailės muziejus (Samogitian Art Museum).
