About the museum
Árran is a national Lule Sámi centre by the ferry landing in Ájluokta/Drag in Hamarøy municipality. The centre was opened by King Harald in 1994, and the building was erected in two construction phases, in 1994 and 2003. The architect was Knut Eldby. The building covers about 2,000 square metres, with a central section shaped like a lavvo (tent) and wings that recall gammer (turf houses). The name Árran means hearth in Lule Sámi, and the logo is an octagon meant to recall a hearth surrounded by eight stones.
The centre is run by Árran julevsáme guovdásj AS, which since 2023 has been a limited company owned by the Sámi Parliament (49 per cent), Hamarøy municipality (34 per cent) and Nordland county municipality (17 per cent). The operation has three main areas: a Sámi museum, a Lule Sámi language centre and a cultural centre. The Sámi Parliament's administration and NRK Sápmi are also based here.
The museum manages Sámi cultural heritage for the Lule Sámi and Pite Sámi areas in Norway. The collections comprise objects, photographs, duodji (Sámi handicraft), art and archive material, which are conveyed through exhibitions, guided tours, activities and publications. The exhibition Viessom gives visitors insight into the traditional life of the coastal Sámi, while Fragments of Lived Lives deals with boarding schools, resistance work during the Second World War and racial biology research.
