About the museum
Knut Hamsun’s childhood home lies at the Hamsund farm in Hamarøy, beneath the great peaks. The Pedersen family were farmers from Lom in Gudbrandsdalen who moved north when Knut was small. At home they spoke Gudbrandsdalen dialect, while the children learned the Nordland dialect.
His mother Tora suffered from a nervous illness, and at the age of eleven Knut was sent to his uncle Hans at Presteid. At the age of nineteen he left Nordland to become a writer. His upbringing in the north nevertheless came to mark many of his books.
In the summer season a guide meets guests in the house and invites them to storytelling around the table over a cup of coffee. Up the narrow staircase is the old boys’ room with Knut’s peg, into which the letter “K” has been carved, and his mother’s room. In the living room his father Peder’s sewing machine still stands in the corner. The visit is well suited to families with children, who can play in the carpentry workshop (snekkerverkstedet) or in the rote loft (roteloftet), where they make letters and hang up their favourite words. Every year on 4 August, Hamsun’s birthday, the Hamsunsenteret marks the day at the childhood home.
