About the museum
The old trading farm Breidablikk has been an important meeting place in the district since 1845. The farm has a history going right back to the Iron Age, but most of the houses standing there today date from when the merchant Jens Pedersen took over the farm around 1845 and started trading in the stabbur (storehouse).
Trade grew rapidly through the 19th century and included, among other things, its own freight shipping company, clothing manufacture and a bakery. Beside the barn the merchant built a courtroom (tingsal), which was used for local assemblies (ting) and court hearings. The trading business lasted until 1963, and the merchant family lived in the main house until the late 1960s. In the 1970s the idea arose of turning the site into a museum, and Hamarøy bygdetun opened in 1980.
On the farmstead stand the våningshus (main house, a converted Nordland house from 1860), Kapellangården (the chaplain’s farm), Kramboden Antikvariat (an antiquarian shop), a cowshed with barn, bårstue (a room for laying out the dead), a drying house, a sleeping loft and a stabbur. Hamsunsenteret (the Hamsun Centre) occasionally invites guests to literary feasts in the old rooms of the main house, and the pub “Teodor med brokk” is located in the bårstue. The trading farm is also used for school outreach. The buildings are not open to the public, but it is possible to walk around the farmstead.
