About the museum
Batterie Dietl is one of Europe’s largest coastal fortifications from the Second World War. Three of the largest land-mounted guns in the world were stationed here; they fired shells with a diameter of 40.6 cm and had a range of up to 56 kilometres. The fortress guarded the approach to Vestfjorden and the shipping route to Narvik, where iron ore from Sweden was loaded.
One of the gun bunkers has been converted into a museum with restored ammunition and machine rooms. The bunker has remained untouched since the war, with original installations and inscriptions on the walls, which are up to 3.5 metres thick. The exhibition tells of everyday life for the soldiers, prisoners of war, forced labourers and the local population on Engeløya during the war years.
The entire fortress area can be explored on foot, with many ruins, bunkers and rock halls and views towards the Lofoten Wall (Lofotveggen). The area is pasture land, and visitors go there at their own risk. The museum is run by Nordlandsmuseet.
