About the museum
Steigen bygdetun lies on Engeløya, just down the avenue from Steigen prestegård (rectory). Here visitors can experience how people in Steigen lived and worked from the late 1800s. The farmstead is surrounded by trees, and visitors can go into all the houses.
The main house, Breidablikk, is the old Doktorgården (doctor's farm). There the doctor's office and the working conditions of the district doctor around 1900 are shown; the doctor's surgery was in operation from 1877 to 1962. The rooms are furnished as they might have looked in the doctor's family home. On the second floor, underwear and handicrafts from the collection are displayed, often supplemented by changing exhibitions.
In Fridastua, a husmannsstue (cotter's cottage) from around 1900, you can get a sense of how most people lived more than a hundred years ago. The smithy has the tools the blacksmith used, and the old general store has shelves filled with goods from earlier times. In the summer season Doktorfruens kafé (the doctor's wife's café) is run. The farmstead is run by Nordlandsmuseet.
