About the museum
Berger museum is located in Fossekleiva kultursenter at Berger in Svelvik and is part of Vestfoldmuseene. The museum conveys the history of the textile industry and of the community that grew up around the factories Berger and Fossekleven by the watercourse. Berger is one of Norway's best-preserved industrial communities. The workers' housing in Øvre and Nedre gate, the staff housing, the church from 1895 and several other buildings are still where they have always been, and Berger gård continues to operate.
The permanent exhibitions contain a unique collection of pattern drawings and the story of the success of Bergerpleddet (the Berger blanket). The main exhibition “Transformasjonen – Fra industrisamfunn til kunst- og kultursamfunn” (“The Transformation – From Industrial Society to Art and Culture Society”) focuses on the textile industry and the community around it.
The museum and Fossekleiva kultursenter share premises and work closely together. Together they form a venue and a meeting place for residents of the surrounding municipalities, with both art exhibitions and cultural events.
