About the museum
The visitor centre lies in the hamlet of Elgå in Engerdal municipality, at the southern gateway to Femundsmarka National Park and at the landing stage for the ferry boat Fæmund II. On the way there you pass Gutulia, Norway’s smallest national park. The Miljødirektoratet (Norwegian Environment Agency) re-authorised the centre in September 2025 for five new years, and it is one of 46 authorised visitor centres in Norway.
In the exhibition “Røtter” visitors can immerse themselves in local history, wildlife and Southern Sámi reindeer herding. The exhibition places particular emphasis on the Southern Sámi perspective and on ecological connections, for example the importance of dead trees at different stages.
Outside, an experience trail leads down to the jetty and the Fæmund II, and there is a nature playground among the trees. The staff give tips and advice on destinations, sell fishing licences, charge for long-term parking, rent out bicycles and lend out kvistbrennere (twig stoves) free of charge. Teaching for kindergartens and school classes is free of charge.
