About the museum
Blokkodden villmarksmuseum (wilderness museum) lies just south of Drevsjø in Engerdal, on a headland in Lake Drevsjøen that gave the hamlet its name. The idea of preserving the old forest huts (skogskoier) in the municipality arose among people working for Femund Skogforvaltning (Femund Forest Management) in the 1970s. The municipal cultural office brought in Norsk Skogmuseum (Norwegian Forestry Museum), and Femund Skogforvaltning made land available and took on the collection of buildings and objects.
In 1981 Museumssenteret for Trysil-Engerdal (the Trysil-Engerdal Museum Centre) was established, and under the direction of conservator Kåre Sveen the whole area was developed into a museum showing the natural conditions for life and livelihoods in Engerdal. The museum preserves buildings, installations and objects linked to farming, forestry, hunting and fishing, and Sámi livelihoods and culture have a large place. Because the area has cultural monuments linked to Rørosverket (the Røros copper works), Blokkodden also reflects this part of Engerdal's history, especially through the Eventyrskogen (adventure forest) and Blokkoddentrollet (the Blokkodden troll).
The museum opened in 1984. Because of its cooperation with Elgå reindeer grazing district (Elgå reinbeitedistrikt), it was nominated for the European Museum Prize and received an honourable mention.
