About the museum
Dyre Vaa (1903–1980) grew up in Kviteseid and moved to Rauland in the early 1930s, where he lived for the rest of his life. He made his debut at the Høstutstillingen (Autumn Exhibition) at the age of 20, and the Nasjonalgalleriet (National Gallery) bought a work by him. In 1964 he gave his collection of models and figures in plaster and bronze to Vinje municipality.
The museum opened in June 1981. The collection shows sculptures, paintings, prints and drawings by Dyre Vaa. There is also a section for his son Tor Vaa and one for the painter and printmaker Svallaug Svalastoga. It is estimated that Dyre Vaa made around 250 sculptures and busts, perhaps 1,000 paintings and 31 lithographs.
