About the museum
Knut Skinnarland (1909–1993) was born in Rauland and is regarded as one of the leading sculptors of his generation. He trained at the craft school at Dovre and then at arts and crafts schools and academies in Oslo and Copenhagen, and made his debut at the Høstutstillingen (Autumn Exhibition) in 1945.
From 1948 he worked on the restoration of Nidaros Cathedral and made around 30 works there, among them Abraham and Isaac on the west front. Other works include fishermen's memorials in Ålesund and Akureyri, and memorials to A.O. Vinje and Sondre Norheim. He taught at Rauland Akademi from 1978 to 1980 and received the Telemark county cultural prize in 1979.
The collection shows more than 100 works, including sculptures, drawings and prints, and a copy of his studio in Rauland. Each year a special exhibition presents works by living artists, which are also for sale.
