About the museum

Gamle Kvernes bygdemuseum is part of the millennium site Kvernes on Averøy and shows a coastal farm environment as it was from the 1600s to the 1800s. The museum farmyard has houses, a storehouse and a quern house, each with its own history and content. Down towards the sea lies the museum's maritime section, with a rorbu and boathouses (naust), and boats and tools that show how important the sea and access to it were for the settlement. Here lived fishing farmers: while the men and the older sons were at sea, the women, the children and the old ran the farm.

Before summer 2023 the collection gained a new building, Vebenstad school from 1910, where visitors can experience what school life was like more than a hundred years ago. The Kvernes cultural area is Averøy municipality's millennium site, and in 2018 Kvernes became one of the key sites on the Kystpilegrimsleia, the pilgrim route along the west-coast shore northwards to Nidaros. Kvernes stave church (stavkirke) lies right next to it and is managed by Fortidsminneforeningen (the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments).

The museum has activities all year round, with themes such as local food traditions, crafts and local history. The church walk (Kirkestivandringen) in May and the Olsok gathering (Olsokstevnet) on the last weekend in July are popular events, and the museum has an active group of volunteers.
