About the museum
Mellemværftet in Kristiansund is a protected shipyard that is still in operation. Its main task has been maintaining the county's fleet of smaller sailing vessels. The yard has three slipways that can take vessels up to 90 feet, a workshop with a machine shop and smithy, and a former foundry. The residence on the site was built towards the end of the 19th century and housed the families who owned the yard.
The Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren) protected the yard in 2018 as a building, cultural and industrial heritage site. Activity takes place at the yard throughout the year, with craftsmen, the slipway master (beddingsmesteren) and members of Fartøyvernforeningen (the Norwegian vessel preservation association). The museum also runs blacksmithing courses for those who want to learn traditional crafts.
Mellemværftet is one of the departments of Nordmørsmuseum. The outdoor area is open and freely accessible all year round, and the museum offers guided tours.
