About the museum

Norsk klippfiskmuseum is housed in Milnbrygga, an authentic gallery quay (svalgangsbrygge) from the 18th century by Milnbergan in Kristiansund. The museum is a branch of Nordmørsmusea and conveys the history of clipfish in Kristiansund and in Nordmøre from the early 18th century, and its importance for culture, trade and industry.

The quay was built in 1749 by William Gordon, one of the founders of the clipfish industry in Kristiansund and in Norway. It takes its name from a later owner, Walter Miln, who bought it in 1772. Milnbergan is one of the country's oldest and largest clipfish drying grounds (berg), and the large rock flats (svaberg) around the quay were well suited to production. The season began in March and lasted all summer. The cod was split, salted and pressed in the holds of the boats. In Kristiansund the fish was first washed on the shore, salt-matured and washed again, and then laid out on the rocks to dry for four to six weeks or more. In the season about 150 people could work here, many of them women and children.

Today visitors are guided through the quay's untouched interior and can experience the atmosphere, with the smell of clipfish and salt in the walls. Several photo exhibitions are also shown on life on the clipfish drying grounds and on how the fish was made and exported.
