About the museum
The Hjemmefrontmuseet in Rakkestad opened in 1983 thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts, including veterans of the Home Guard and younger people interested in war history. The aim was to keep the occupation years alive in local memory, as more than 30 years had passed since the war. The friends' association Hjemmefrontmuseets Venner was founded to support the work. Crown Prince Harald and Crown Princess Sonja officially opened the museum on 19 October 1983.
The museum grew in the late 1980s, and new premises were built. Today it has about 400 square metres of exhibition space, more than 100 metres of glass display cases and around 4,000 objects spread over three floors.
The exhibitions cover most of the Second World War: the occupation, the armed resistance, Milorg, agents, Nasjonal Samling, everyday life during the war, concentration camps and the liberation. Information boards show pictures and descriptions of the objects, which include uniforms and weapons, among others.
