About the museum
Skiptvet Bygdemuseum lies beside the bygdetun (rural heritage farmstead) in the centre of Skiptvet and opened in 1944. The museum has six buildings moved from various farms in the district. The houses are between 100 and 300 years old, and some of the objects are even older. The collection shows how people in Skiptvet lived and worked in the past.
On the farmstead are, among others, the smithy (smia), Gamleskolen (the old school), Skaugstua with its kitchen, and Liverudstua. The museum is run by a museum board in Skiptvet municipality, and volunteers do much of the work, including community work days (dugnader) in spring and autumn. Skiptvet Historielag (local history society) is based in Gamleskolen.
On open days a blacksmith works in the smithy, the local women's association (bygdekvinnelaget) bakes flatbrød (flatbread) in the kitchen of Skaugstua, and handicrafts and knitwear are sold. The museum board shows visitors around and tells them about the museum, and coffee, yeast baking and svele (Norwegian pancakes) are served. The municipality also runs another museum, Nes Lensemuseum ved Glomma.
