About the museum
Askim historielag (local history society) was founded on 23 November 1938 to take over the running of “Bygdemuseet”, which at the time had buildings and objects scattered across several places in the village. In March 1939 the society’s museum committee was up and running, and the aim was to find a site for a combined museum. This proved more difficult than expected, but by August 1940 the plot at Grøtvedtåsen was ready, and the first buildings were in place in 1941.
The museum lies beautifully by Grøtvedtoppen and has houses typical of a farm: a farmyard with a two-storey house, a farm building and a stabbur. Kjøbmandsgaarden (the merchant’s farmhouse) with an old shop room is also here. The collections include many interesting and some rare objects that give an impression of how our ancestors lived and worked.
The museum is owned and run by Askim historielag. During the tours, the guides sell ice cream, soft drinks and coffee in Lierstua.
