About the museum
The Hurtigrutemuseet in Stokmarknes tells the story of the Hurtigruten, the coastal route that has been both a lifeline along the coast and an important chapter in Norwegian transport and coastal cultural history. The route began with the maiden voyage in 1893 with Richard With, and the Hurtigruten has been in operation for more than 130 years. Today the museum is part of Museum Nord.
The museum's main attraction is MS Finnmarken from 1956, which sailed on the Hurtigruten until 1993. The ship is in impressive condition, and visitors can go on board and see the bridge, the galley, the engine room, the decks, old cabins and the crew's quarters. The ship has been restored and returned to its original state, including the 2nd-class dining saloon, which today is the museum café with food from the 1950s and 1960s.
In addition, the saloons from the steamer DS Finmarken from 1912 are on show; the steamer was present when the Risøyrenna was opened in 1922. The exhibitions also cover cargo and freight, the Hurtigruten during the Second World War, when 17 ships were sunk, and the everyday life of seafarers. The lens from Litløy lighthouse, which is 2.5 metres in diameter, is one of the highlights. The museum opened in its present form in 2021 and has since received several nominations and awards.

There is a lift between the museum's floors. MS Finnmarken was built without universal design, but the ship has been adapted so that several decks can be visited by wheelchair, including the restaurant, the flag deck, the lifeboat deck, the promenade deck and the cargo holds. Some passages on board may be too narrow for some wheelchairs; a narrow wheelchair can be borrowed. Contact the museum before the visit with questions about accessibility.
