About the museum
Melbo Hovedgård at Melbu is the preserved home of the industrial pioneer Christian Frederiksen. At the age of 17 he started what the museum calls “the industrial revolution in miniature” at Melbu. Over about 30 years, around 1900, Melbu was transformed from a large farm into the industrial centre of the region, and the population rose from 77 in 1891 to around 1,000 in 1920. Frederiksen’s idea was to use local raw materials and to process them as far as possible himself.
The museum garden was designed in English landscape style in 1890 and today holds a collection of old perennials gathered in Vesterålen and Lofoten. Paths lead from the garden into the park, which has bridges and streams. The main farm is stately, and tours of both the main building and the garden are offered for groups.
The museum is part of Museum Nord.
