About the museum
Neptun Sildoljefabrikk is a technical and industrial cultural heritage site on little Svinøya, on the south side of Hadseløya in Vesterålen. The factory was established in 1910 by the industrial pioneer Christian Frederiksen at Melbu and was in operation under various owners until 1987. The plant is an example of the industrial fishing industry from the late 19th century into the 20th century.
In spring 1991 Norsk Fiskeindustrimuseum was established in the buildings, and at the start of the 1990s the factory was taken into use as a museum. The history includes fire, workers' struggles and the German occupation, and after the Second World War the plant was hit by a fire.
Today reuse characterises the operation of the closed industrial premises. There is, among other things, a blues club and a concert hall in one of the old raw-material tanks. Riksantikvaren protected the site in 2019. Museum Nord offers outdoor guided tours for groups on the grounds and a concert experience in the herring oil tank.
