About the museum
The school museum “Den Riibergske Stiftelse” (the Riiberg Foundation school) is located at the waterfront town of Jelsa in Suldal and is run by Ryfylkemuseet. The schoolhouse was built in 1774 with funds from a foundation that Marcille Riiberg established in 1755. The school was both a primary school for the children of Jelsa and a free place of learning for two young people at a time, for two years, so that they could later become teachers in the travelling schools (omgangsskolen). For over 40 years the Riiberg school trained teachers for Ryfylke, until teacher training was closed for financial reasons in 1820.
The primary school continued in the building until the early 20th century. At the initiative of the staff of Jelsa school, the schoolhouse was restored and turned into a museum in 1983. The building is an important reminder of school history and at the same time helps to tell the story of the waterfront town.
The waterfront town of Jelsa is the best-preserved waterfront town in Ryfylke, with small houses from the 18th century and the wooden church from 1647 as its nearest neighbour. The town has roots going back to the 17th century, when Jelsa was important as a church site and main parish. In the summer season there are guided tours that include both the schoolhouse and the church.
