Nedstrand bygdemuseum

Local history museum (bygdemuseum) in Nedstrand in Tysvær, with exhibitions in the old schoolroom and Norway's oldest preserved customs house from 1549.

Opening hoursAdmission NOK 50

About the museum

Nedstrand bygdemuseum consists of several separate exhibitions in and around Stranda in Nedstrand. By the grounds of Stranda school (skule) are the museum's head office and several exhibitions assembled from local collections, and on the grounds a small amphitheatre has been built for storytelling, lectures and concerts.

In a protective building on the nearby ferry quay stands a restored customs house from 1549, which is among the oldest timber buildings in the country. The customs house was part of the customs station “Ryfylke toldsted”, which played an important role in the extensive timber trade of the area for several hundred years. The exhibitions tell of this trade and of everyday life in the district in the early 20th century.

The museum also has use of a recreation area at Leirå, where the rebuilt Nessaskulen from the 1860s can be visited, and at Leiranger there are the remains of the wall of an old leidang boathouse (leidangsnaust) from the Viking Age. Nedstrand museum and Nedstrand historielag (local history society) are hosts in summer. The museum is part of Haugalandmuseet.
